Khajuraho
The City of Temples and Art
Khajuraho, located in Madhya Pradesh, is one of India’s most fascinating heritage destinations. Famous for its group of exquisite medieval Hindu and Jain temples, Khajuraho is renowned globally for its stunning architecture, detailed sculptures, and sensuous carvings, some of which depict aspects of life including love, dance, music, and spirituality.
These temples were built between 950 AD and 1050 AD by the Chandela dynasty and originally numbered around 85; today, about 25 temples have survived and are well-preserved. They are divided into Western, Eastern, and Southern groups, with the Western group (home to temples like Kandariya Mahadev) being the most famous and UNESCO World Heritage-listed.
The beauty of Khajuraho lies not just in its erotic art (which forms only a small part of the carvings), but also in the deep symbolism of human passions, divine love, and spiritual liberation.
Key Highlights:
Kandariya Mahadev Temple – Finest example of North Indian temple architecture.
Lakshmana Temple – Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, known for intricate sculptures.
Parsvanath Temple – Most important Jain temple in the eastern group.
Light and Sound Show – Showcasing the history of Khajuraho in the evening.
Khajuraho Dance Festival – A famous classical dance celebration held every February.
